LL-37 is the 37-residue C-terminal peptide of the human cathelicidin precursor hCAP18 (UniProt P49913, residues 134-170). UniProt states that proteinase 3 cleaves the precursor to release LL-37, and that LL-37 binds bacterial lipopolysaccharide and permeabilises membranes in vitro. It also chemoattracts human leukocytes through the formyl peptide receptor FPR2 (FPRL1). As ropocamptide (INN), a topical form reached a phase IIb trial in venous leg ulcers; the 2021 report found no significant benefit in the full study population.
