alpha-Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) identity
Identifiers, parent molecule, targets and development stage, from curated data.
alpha-MSH is Ac-SYSMEHFRWGKPV-NH2, residues 138-150 of human pro-opiomelanocortin (UniProt P01189), with an N-acetyl group and a C-terminal valine amide. UniProt describes it as a ligand of MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R; MC1R activation promotes melanogenesis and MC4R activation is anorexigenic. Its INN is intermedine. GSRS lists modimelanotide and bremelanotide as derivatives.

- Development
- Phase 1The only registered trial of alpha-MSH itself is phase 1 (NCT00004496, acute renal failure, completed; ClinicalTrials.gov search 2026-10-08). ChEMBL CHEMBL214332 gives max_phase 2.0, but its only indication row is that phase 1 trial, and no phase 2 trial of alpha-MSH was found in ClinicalTrials.gov or Europe PMC. Analogues (afamelanotide, bremelanotide) are separate substances. Source (opens in a new tab)
